Since 2009, the Farrukh Saif Foundation has been at the forefront of defending those unjustly accused under the blasphemy law. Our findings indicate that the majority of these accusations stem from personal vendettas, misinformation, or outright malice, rather than any legitimate legal breaches. The failure of the Pakistani government to protect the accused and their communities has only exacerbated the situation, with radicalism fueling mob justice and intimidation tactics that undermine the rule of law.

The plight of Shafqat Emmanuel and Shagufta Kausar, a Christian couple from Gojra City, Punjab, epitomizes the egregious misuse of blasphemy laws. Accused of sending blasphemous texts in English—a language they do not speak due to their lack of education—Shafqat, who is also paralyzed, was subjected to inhumane torture in an attempt to force a confession. Under duress, Shafqat confessed to protect his wife from being humiliated, leading to their conviction and death sentence despite a lack of tangible evidence. This case underscores the systemic flaws and biases inherent in the prosecution of blasphemy laws in Pakistan.
