Shabana and her mother Gama were willing to share

Shabana and her mother Gama were willing to share their story of surviving 15 years of slavery at a brick kiln in Bahawalpur. Shabana, her mother, and three siblings and their children were trapped in a cycle of abuse and exploitation following the death of their father, who had fallen victim to the extortion tactics of the kiln owner. The family was subjected to violence and the targeting of their children as a means of coercion. In one particularly heinous instance, Shabana’s son was maimed for life after being subjected to a mill grinder as punishment. Further, just two months ago, Shabana herself was abducted and assaulted by the kiln owner while her family was away. The Kiln owner abducted her from home and violently raped her for 4 hours straight. Thankfully, their story does not end there. Through a confidential network, Shabana and her family were rescued from this nightmare by Redeem the Oppressed, an organization dedicated to rescuing persecuted religious minorities from slavery and providing them with comprehensive support to help them break the cycle of poverty and avoid returning to slavery. This organization, whose mission is to defend and promote the rights of religious minorities facing persecution, provides good-paying jobs, affordable housing, initial funds for food and necessities, and educational opportunities for the children of rescued families. In addition to executing rescue missions and providing legal aid and safe homes for victims of persecution, the organization also works to combat blasphemy laws, forced conversions, rape, abduction, and modern slavery. Shabana and her family are just one example of the extreme cases that this organization deals with on a daily basis. Hope and healing: Rukhsana & Arshad family journey from slavery to a better future

Arshad, his wife Rukhsana, and their two young children were once a happy family. Arshad worked as a vegetable salesman and had been doing so for years, providing for his family and living a comfortable life. However, when Arshad fell ill and was no longer able to work, his family faced financial hardship. Desperate for a solution, Arshad took out a loan from relatives and used his savings to try and get back on his feet. Unfortunately, the loan wasn’t enough to cover the costs and a kiln owner offered him another loan.

Arshad and his family were then forced to work long, grueling shifts in the kiln (12+ hours/day, 7 days/week) in order to pay back the loan. Despite their best efforts, they couldn’t keep up with the payments and the debt only continued to grow. The kiln owner mistreated everyone, including Arshad and his family, and any time they resisted or tried to stand up for themselves, the abuse only worsened.

The loan was originally small, but over time it seemed to increase without any clear reason. Eventually, when work at the kiln slowed down, Arshad and his family were told they would be transferred to another kiln. However, it soon became clear that they had been sold and their debt had only grown further as a result.

As a result of all of this, Arshad and his family have been trapped in a cycle of debt and exploitation for the past 16 years. They have had to work long hours in difficult conditions, and have been mistreated by those in positions of power. It has been a truly heartbreaking and demoralizing experience for them, and one that they never could have imagined when they were a happy, thriving family.

Fortunately, through a mission we organized, Arshad and his family were able to break free from this cycle of slavery and abuse. They were redeemed in the middle of the night, relocated to a different region, and provided with new living accommodations and a clean slate. With the help of this organization, Arshad and his family were able to start anew and rebuild their lives.

My name is Younis Masih, and my wife Shanaz and I have eight children. We used to live in a small village, where I worked as a farmer for very low wages. It was hard work, but it was honest and it allowed us to provide for our family.

When my oldest daughter came of age for marriage, I faced a dilemma. I had no way to afford a proper wedding for her, and I was worried that she would never find a husband without one. That’s when an individual approached me with a proposition.

The man was the owner of a brick kiln, and he offered to pay me wages comparable to my farm work and give me a loan to cover the wedding expenses. It was a tempting offer, but I had a feeling that something wasn’t right. Still, I couldn’t see any other way out, so I accepted.

As it turned out, the man’s offer was too good to be true. When I started working at the kiln, the owners only gave me half of the wages, claiming that the other half was for paying back the loan. This left our family in even more dire circumstances than before.

If that wasn’t bad enough, despite giving over half my wages, the amount I owed on the loan kept increasing. I soon realized that the owners were using the loan as a way to keep me and my family in debt and under their control.

The conditions at the kiln were horrific. We were expected to work seven days a week, and as Christians, we weren’t even allowed to go to church. Our movements were heavily monitored and restricted, and if we didn’t cooperate, we were beaten and humiliated.

Even when there was less work to be done, the owners would force us to do things that we found degrading, like massaging them. There was an incident where my wife fell sick, and when I tried to take her to the hospital, the owners said I had to work. I ignored their demands and took her, but when I returned, they beat me mercilessly, breaking my arm.

My name is Waris Masih, and this is my immediate family - my son Sarfraz Masih with his wife, my wife Shanaz Bibi, and my daughter. For over 30 years, my parents were trapped in a cycle of exploitation, forced to work in kilns to pay off a debt that was incurred through deceit and manipulation by the kiln owners. Despite working endless shifts without a single day off, even during holidays, we received pay that was barely enough to feed and sustain our family. My name is Latif, and I want to share my story with you. I used to work the fields, harvesting crops, but work got scarce. One day, a kiln owner approached me and offered to buy out my contract for the rest of the year and give me an advance. I thought this was my chance to provide for my family, so I took the offer.<br /><br />But what I didn't know was that this offer was too good to be true. The work at the kiln was endless and grueling, with no days off and long shifts. Despite all the work, the loan never seemed to decrease. We barely made enough to survive, as they claimed to take my wages to pay off the loan. Whenever we had family events such as a wedding, we had no money, so we were forced to take more loans from the kiln owner, further indebted myself to him.<br /><br />One day, I injured my leg badly while working and was hospitalized for three months. I had to take another loan and my children were forced to work too. I returned to work, still not fully recovered, limping around. No matter how much we worked, the debt just kept on increasing. They reduced the amount they paid us even more to the point that we struggled to even meet our basic food needs. We truly felt a deep despair, living a life with no money, no education for our children, and no freedom to visit our extended family.<br /><br />But one day, we noticed one of the other families that was enslaved at the kiln seemed vibrant. After further discussion, they told us about Redeem the Oppressed. They got us in contact with them and gave us instructions on how to escape slavery. We are so grateful to them, and are praying for their continued success. Thanks to them, we are free now and able to rebuild our lives. My name is Arrif, and this is my son, his wife, and their children. My wife passed away.<br /><br />[Arrif's son continues the story]<br /><br />Our story starts with my mother falling ill. Her treatment was expensive, so we sold our home to try and pay for it. Despite our efforts, she passed away two years later. When the expenses of her funeral came, a kiln owner approached us with an offer of a loan. We quickly accepted it, but over time, the loan amount grew enormous. Despite working tirelessly to pay it off, we received very little actual pay. Instead, the kiln owner claimed they needed to keep all of our pay for the loans.<br /><br />We were uneducated and unable to understand the manipulation of our accounting at first, but soon after my wife's passing and funeral, we noticed the loan just kept increasing. The work was grueling, and they didn't allow us to attend all the events of our extended family. They only gave us between 1000-2000 rupees per week for our entire family. And while we dreamed of sending our children to school, the kiln owner insisted they work.<br /><br />We were part of a small group that was able to get in touch with Redeem the Oppressed staff. They set up a plan and showed us exactly what needs to be done in order to get out. They then came and rescued us from the kiln slavery, brought us to a safe house, and shortly after found us a place to live and work. We are so thankful to God and the team that rescued us from the kiln slavery and we are free now. My name is Khaliq and this is my wife Mumtazi and our three children. We have been trapped in the cycle of bonded labor, or modern-day slavery, for as long as I can remember. As a child, I began working in the brick kiln alongside my parents, and as I grew older, my own family was drawn into the same cycle of poverty and exploitation.<br /><br />We were forced to take loans from the kiln owner to cover our basic needs, and these loans never decreased, no matter how much we worked. We were forced to work 12-13 hour shifts, with no days off, and if for any reason we couldn't work, such as when it rained, our loans would just increase. It was a never-ending cycle of labor and debt, and we despaired of ever breaking free.<br /><br />But through our family friends, we heard about Redeem the Oppressed, an organization that helps families like ours escape from slavery. They contacted us and in short order, our family was liberated from the brick kiln and the endless cycle of debt and exploitation.<br /><br />We are forever grateful to Redeem the Oppressed and the donors that make their mission possible. Without them, we would still be trapped in slavery, our children forced to work instead of going to school, our future and our dignity stolen from us.
